Mizoram’s apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) on Wednesday threatened to launch statewide agitations if the state government fails to take concrete steps to resolve the state’s border dispute with neighbouring Assam.

MZP general secretary, Lalnunmawia Pautu said that the meeting of the 'executive committee'  of the MZP on Wednesday blamed the state government for "failing" to take proper steps towards solving the long pending border issue despite pressures from the student body.

The MZP had held a protest rally against the government’s alleged inaction to resolve the border dispute on July 19.

Pautu alleged that the state government did not take any measure including a meeting of the 'core committee' on border issue to respond to the students demand. “The government has insulted the people as well as the students for being silent on the border issue despite strong demands from the people,” Pautu said.

Reacting to state Home minister, Lalchamliana’s comment that only the Parliament can resolve the border dispute, Pautu said the state government needs not seek attention from the Centre as the state government can make a final decision in the ongoing bilateral talks over the border dispute. He also said that the student body will carry out state-wide agitations if the Mizoram government fails to take concrete measures to resolve the state’s border dispute with Assam.

The MZP also demanded a full fledged Governor.

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi was sworn-in to take additional charge of Mizoram on March 9.

Pautu said the student body will write to both the President and the Prime Minister over the matter.

Meanwhile, the student body asked the Governor-in-charge to give his assent to Assam’s NRC like bill, the “Mizoram Maintenance of Household Registers Bill 2019.”

The bill, which seeks to detect 'foreigners' in the state was passed by the state assembly on March 19 and is awaiting approval from the Governor.

The MZP said that the bill is important as it will protect the indigenous people from being assimilated by illegal immigrants or foreigners.

It then asked the state government and all opposition members to take measures so that the Governor gives his assent at the earliest.
