Nagaland to see thunderstorms, rainfall till August 21

Dimapur, August 17 (MExN): Nagaland is likely to experience generally active monsoon conditions with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across several districts from August 18 to 21, according to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA). The NSDMA said light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few to scattered places during the four-day period, with localized thunderstorms and lightning expected over several districts.

On August 18, light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few places in Longleng and Phek, while localized thunderstorms and lightning are expected in Dimapur and Peren. On August 19, thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are likely over Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Peren and Shamator. On August 20, similar conditions are expected at scattered locations, particularly over Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Tseminyu, Tuensang and Zunheboto.

The weather activity is expected to continue on August 21, with thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light to moderate rainfall likely at scattered locations, particularly over Chümoukedima, Kiphire, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Tseminyu, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto.

Based on the four-day cumulative rainfall forecast, Longleng is expected to receive the highest rainfall total at 81.15 mm, followed by Mokokchung at 59.85 mm, Peren at 51.72 mm and Tuensang at 50.67 mm. Mon is forecast to receive 47.26 mm, Wokha 46.78 mm and Tseminyu 43.98 mm during the period. Other districts are expected to record cumulative rainfall between 18.15 mm and 41.12 mm.

The NSDMA cautioned that thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning and brief gusty winds, with the possibility of localized waterlogging, slippery roads and reduced visibility during periods of rainfall.

It advised residents in landslide-prone and other vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, particularly in areas receiving repeated rainfall. Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution while travelling, especially along vulnerable and landslide-prone road stretches.

The public has been advised to monitor the latest weather updates through the Safer Nagaland mobile application and the NSDMA Weather Portal, and to follow official advisories during thunderstorms and periods of rainfall.
