NPP likely to contest in 25 seats, will play major role in polls

Newmai News Network Aizawl | October 29 The National People's Party (NPP) is expected to contest in 25 assembly constituencies in the upcoming election to the 40-member Mizoram assembly scheduled to be held on November 28.

“Many people have asked for party tickets, and as of today, we have more than 25 candidates, mostly youths, are already in the line. We will finalise the list of candidates shortly,” NPP leader, Sasank Ghatraj told media persons during a press conference here on Monday. He, however, could not confirm as to how many seats the party will contest in the upcoming assembly elections. “We will contest as many seats as possible,” he added.

Ghatraj, who is also national observer of the party for Mizoram said that the NPP will forge neither pre-poll alliance. He said that the party would fight the election alone and play a major role in the polls.

The NPP was launched by the party president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on September 29 in Aizawl. The party is one of the NDA partners. The NPP is also one of the constituent units of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). In Meghalaya, the NPP is the major partner of the ruling MDA alliance. In Nagaland and in Manipur NPP is the ruling alliance.

According to Ghatraj, the party was established with a vision of making it pan northeast to fight for the cause of minorities of the region so that their voices are heard by Delhi. He added that the NPP came for the people of Mizoram and development of the state. Ghatraj claimed that the NPP was launched in Mizoram at a perfect time. He then expressed confidence that the party will be part of the government in Mizoram. “Mizoram will witness a coalition government where the NPP will be definitely a part of it,” he said.

Meanwhile, state BJP vice president, Suanzalang joined the NPP on Monday. Citing about the reasons for his leaving the BJP, Suanzalang said it was due to "mistrust and betrayal". He alleged that BJP did not honour its promises to field him as a party candidate.   It can be noted here that BJP has so far released names of 13 candidates for the Mizoram assembly polls.
