NU unveils Animal House & Zoological Museum to advance research in zoology

Lumami, September 30 (MExN): The Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof JK Patnaik, inaugurated the newly established Animal House and Zoological Museum within the Department of Zoology.

In his address, Prof Patnaik emphasised the importance of developing world-class research facilities that enable scholars to master essential techniques in animal experimentation, thereby enhancing the quality of in vivo research at the university.

Prof Patnaik expressed his enthusiasm for the Zoological Museum, highlighting its potential to enrich students’ understanding of taxonomic studies. He also shared his vision for upgrading research facilities at Nagaland University, particularly mentioning the ongoing development of a dedicated “Cancer Research Laboratory.” He noted that a dedicated team has been working on this initiative for the past six months, with plans for its launch in the coming months.

Prof Bendang Ao, Head of the Department of Zoology, welcomed the attendees and reflected on the department's journey over the past twenty-seven years. He provided an overview of the recent advancements in research facilities and the department's commitment to excellence in research.

The inauguration was followed by a workshop titled “Role of Animal Models in Research,” moderated by Dr Ramita Sougrakpam, Assistant Professor. The workshop featured a lecture by Prof. Ranjit Kumar on the significance of animal models in biomedical research, discussing various types of animals used in research. Dr Pranay Punj Pankaj, Associate Professor, also presented on the standard operating procedures for animal research.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Lobeno Mozhui.
