Nyiro Range orgs demand immediate action on failing schools, health centers

WOKHA, OCTOBER 1 (MExN): A consultative meeting to address the condition of government schools and health centers in Nyiro Range, Wokha, was held on September 28, initiated by the Nyiro Range Students’ Union (NRSU).

According to a press release from the NRSU, the meeting saw participation from various stakeholders, including representatives of the Nyiro Range Public Organizations, Nyiro Range Council Chairman Union, Nyiro Range Eloe Ekhüng, Nyiro Range GBs Union, Village Students’ Union, as well as head teachers and staff from local government institutions, PHC Nyiro, and health and wellness centers in Longsachung and N Longidang.

The speakers at the meeting raised critical issues hindering the development of schools and health centers in the area, particularly the shortage of teaching staff in government schools and medical staff at PHC Nyiro. In addition to staff shortages, the PHC Nyiro building was reported to be in a "deplorable state."

Despite repeated appeals for the appointment of a permanent medical officer, the NRSU noted that no action has been taken. Instead, the department has assigned a medical officer on a temporary basis, who visits only twice a month, which the NRSU called“absurd response” to the community’s legitimate demands. The union urged the concerned department to conduct an official visit to assess the current state of PHC Nyiro at the earliest.

The NRSU also pointed out that previous notices were sent to government employees who had been neglecting their duties, but some individuals remain unresponsive. It has now warned that failure to resume work within seven days will lead to further action, including reporting the matter to higher authorities.

The meeting also discussed the rising issue of illegal activities, including rampant partying along the Nyiro Range road (Nyiro-N Longidang) and KVK Road (Satsuphen-Yanthamo). These behaviors not only tarnish the image of the area but also disturb the peaceful atmosphere of surrounding villages, the union stated. To address this, the gathering passed a resolution to curb such activities, with offenders to be held accountable and penalized according to the resolution’s provisions.
