Police fired tear gas shells and 'mock bombs' as vendors of Ima (Women) Market on Monday protested demanding justice in the case of the 12-year-old girl student who was found dead in her hostel room in a suspicious manner.
A large number of women vendors of the Ima (women) Market attempted to march towards the Cheirap Court Complex where the son of principal of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School was produced in the court of Imphal West chief judicial magistrate on Monday.
Ph Robinson, the youngest son of founder cum principal of the school who is the junior administrator of the school was produced in the court, ending his seven days police custody period. The court then remanded him to judicial custody for 15 days.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police investigating into the case arrested him on July 30 last.
The SIT has also arrested the founder cum principal Ph Landhoni and coordinator Ph Romita Devi who is the daughter of the principal on August 3 evening. They were currently in police custody where Imphal West duty magistrate remanded for four days.
Considering the sensitivity of the case, a large number of civil police including female personnel armed with riot control gears had already been detailed in and around the court complex.
When a large number of women vendors started marching toward the court complex which is only around 200 meters away from the Ima Market, police blocked them after which a confrontation broke out.
A duty magistrate who arrived at the spot, using loud speaker, tried to convince the women vendors, saying that prohibition order of gathering five or more people that are likely to turn mob was being in force.
Not paying any heed to the request of the duty magistrate, the women vendors attempted to proceed towards the court complex despite strong resistance from the police.
The female police personnel detailed there engaged in confrontation with the women vendors.
With the situation going out of control, the police resorted to firing tear gas shells and used 'mock bombs' to disperse the women vendors.
